Apple Watch Series 4 GPS, 44mm Black Friday Deals 2020
We have the Apple watch series for and yes I’m left-handed with that out of the way this is the first major redesign of the Apple watch since it first came out in April of 2015 this is a bit unusual because typically with a lot of tech like your phone you get these tick-tock cycles where one year you get a major Hardware redesign and then the next year you get incremental updates
a spec bump with a series four we get a 30% increase in screen size which reaches out all the way to the edges of the display this goes a step further with the fact that you now have the option of a 44 millimeter or 40 millimeter screen as opposed to the previous 42 millimeter or 38 millimeter it’s a subtle change when you compare it to the previous generation screen but it makes a big difference especially when you’re interacting with an already small screen doing any sort of touch gesture this year we lose the ceramic option that we got with series 3 which leaves us with just stainless steel and aluminum but what we lose with ceramic we now gain with the gold option so you gold iPhone users out there and now have a watch to match the side button is now flush against the outer casing it doesn’t stick out very clean I’d love to see something like this on the next generation iPhone or iPad the digital crown now has haptic feedback giving you this satisfying clicky feeling as you stroll or navigate through apps another thing worth noting the microphone and speakers have been shifted around to reduce echo and speaker volume has been improved by 50% when I tested it it made for much better call quality people generally couldn’t tell I was talking on my watch versus my phone except for when I was moving my wrist around internally faster s4 processor around twice the speed as the last generation it also has apples w3 wireless chip which means it has bluetooth 5 a bit of an unsung hero at the keynote and of course cellular GPS altimeter swim proof and I’ve probably missed some things in my Series 3 review this was kind of a complaint of mine aside from the range and battery life you can also stream audio to multiple audio devices kind of cool if you’re wanting to work out with a friend and listen to the same epic battle music that I do it’s also point seven millimeters thinner than all of the previous generations so it’s faster bigger more capable and thinner exclusive to the series four are the new info graph and info graph modular watch faces the standard info graph face was a little overwhelming to me at first but once you play with it and customize the complications to your liking kind of grows on you I’ve got weather UV air quality and sunrise / sunset with this face you’re also having to look at an analogue style clock to tell the time so if that bothers you there’s the info graph modular face not as much information displayed here and it looks less like a traditional watch but it’s cleaner you also get more space in a display for a comprehensive look at things like your activity rings and heart rate there are also some new faces that are available on the older watches like fire and water vapor and breathe for a little meditation time the fire and water phases are particularly cool looking and I will link the video down below for how they made them but you’ve got to check it out watch bent I’m currently wearing this year’s new nylon sport loop it’s like a sporty-er version of the Milanese loop that adjusts with Velcro it’s not bad feels like something out of the 90s which are starting to make a comeback but it’s not entirely waterproof or sweat proof so if that’s a concern go with the sport band over the nylon sport loop and if you’re upgrading from an earlier watch not to worry your old 42 millimeter and 38 millimeter bands will still fit on these new watches now my general philosophy on technology is that it’s here to help us it’s here to augment us not the other way around so when it comes to things like this I tend to turn off every single notification possible the watch is at its best when you don’t notice it better yet it’s at its best when others around you don’t notice it the problem with the watch is that it’s physically attached to you it’s with you all day every single day so I have to be even more aggressive with the notifications all it takes is one bust completely throw me out of concentration or distract me from a conversation I’m having with another person it just generally makes me a less effective human being so the question is if you take all of that away what’s left what can the watch do for you turns out a few things take Siri for example there are some improvements here response time is much faster and all you need to do now is simply raise your wrist to talk to Siri making my childhood dream of becoming a Power Ranger that much more of a reality they respond to tactile pressure followed by auditory stimulus so what you’re saying is that was just touch and talk also subtle difference but the waveform for Siri now responds directly to your voice oh and podcasts we finally have podcasts can’t believe it took this long I like to listen to podcasts while I’m going for walks so being able to leave my phone behind it’s very nice the only complaint that I have here is that you have to connect to a Bluetooth device in order to be able to listen to your podcasts guessing to save battery life and on the topic of battery life it’s still the same 18 hours they’ve made improvements in some areas like Bluetooth 5 or an LT Pio display or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide can’t believe I got that on the first take but it’s still in for generations 18 hours less if you’re regularly using it for working out or cellular and while the Apple watch is a bit of a different market than a Fitbit or a Garmin wearable those can last for weeks before you need to recharge them so I think there are still some areas to improve here speaking of workouts health and fitness the big thing with the series 4 are its new heart sensors capable of detecting irregular heart rhythms and performing an FDA cleared EKG that you can export and share with your doctor none of these is going to replace actually going to the doctor but this is a big deal for a couple of reasons the first is that this is the first FDA cleared direct-to-consumer wearable that means it could potentially qualify for insurance and it seems like tech companies are starting to take this health space a little bit more seriously take headspace for example they are trying to get FDA clearance for their to make meditation and mindfulness a prescription in the second reason according to the World Health Organization is that heart problems are the leading cause of death for both men and women globally followed by dementia Alzheimer’s and cancer now I’m not sure the level of accuracy for these new heart sensors the Apple watch but I would rather go to the doctor with a false positive warning than a heart attack or stroke of course it’s important to note that these features won’t be available until later this year and if you’re like me and you weren’t paying 100% attention to the keynote you might have missed it both of these features will be available to US customers later this year and we’re working hard to bring them to customers around the world new to the Apple watch series for is fall detection thanks to the improved gyroscope and accelerometer basically if you fall and you’re unresponsive for a minute the watch will automatically contact emergency services Ars Technica recently posted an article about some of the legal concerns with this feature basically there is a community care taking exception meaning that police can enter your home without a warrant and I suggested alternative from a lawyer would be alerting a user determined contact instead of emergency services it is worth noting though that Falls are the second leading cause of accidental or unintentional injury deaths worldwide even more so with the elderly and children in fact if you list your age as 65 or older in your phone the fall detection feature is turned on by default if not you have to turn it on manually the only other big thing missing here as far as health is concerned would be sleep tracking this is a bit more complicated to tackle because the science of sleep is still very young but one thing that most people can agree on is that sleep is important at least seven solid hours a night according to the CDC which has a direct impact on all sorts of health conditions including cardiovascular if Apple tackled that wi
th the FDA even bigger impact and yet another reason to work on battery life as far as fitness is concerned not a lot of new stuff to report here aside from the improved accelerometer and gyroscope for movement detection during specific workouts the rest of the new features like workouts for yoga and hiking automatic workout detection and competitions are all available in the standard watch OS 5 which are available on all of the previous generation watches still no love for resistance training though how am I supposed to know if I’m getting the pump also for high-intensity interval training I would love to be able to control the duration of my intervals with the Apple watch not a huge issue there are plenty of third-party apps that do this but it would be nice finally in my last video I asked the question of is cellular actually worth it and the answer now is it depends if you’re trying to spend less time on your phone and you don’t mind taking calls or texting on the watch or if you’re wanting to listen to Apple podcasts or music while you’re out walking or working out then yes I’d say it’s probably worth it there are a few drawbacks though for you email lovers out there you have to be on Wi-Fi or near your phone to be able to check your email found that out the hard way important side note you can take calls over Wi-Fi with your Apple watch but it’s not turned on by default there are a couple of settings that you have to enable in your phone to make that happen also found that out the hard way there’s still no app for Spotify or YouTube music and for you Tesla owners out there there’s no app to enable you to control your car or use your watch as a key but that comes down to third-party developer support it is perfectly possible for all of those companies to make watch apps so either there’s some big strategic play happening here or it’s just not valuable for them to make it all in all it’s a lot of little improvements to Apple’s LITTLEST device that add up to something that I am going to continue to keep using for the next year I think it’s finally worth it the screen processing power and new health features are a great reason to go with the series 4 over the series 3 I’m also excited to test out all the new EKGs and heart features later this year and let me know in the comments below if that’s a type of video that you want to see but otherwise let me know if you decided to get an Apple watch series 4.
