Fire HD 8 Tablet Black Friday Deals 2020
I finally broke down and bought a Fire HD tablet was it worth it let’s take a look hello Tech friends welcome back if you’re new year my name is Craig I make straightforward and easy to understand tech videos if you’re into smart home devices Apple products and other cool tech you are in the right place links to anything I talked about will be in the description let’s get started this is week number 13 of my 2020 Ecco series you could check out last year’s series up here I’ve been doing an Ecco series for over a year and a half now with the Fire HD tablet gaining so many voice and echo features I decided to buy one after using it I have mixed feelings on it it excels in some areas and in others it just doesn’t cut it as a tablet let’s see if it’s worth it for you first what do you get with the Fire HD tablet at the time of buying this the Fire HD 8 was on sale which was down from note that you might not be aware of at that you are buying an amazon subsidized device what that means is Amazon does show ads on the home screen when you wake the device the ads can be removed for. This is something that I was not aware of but Amazon has been doing this for years with their Cheaper Kindle devices when it is in show mode you do not see these ads also the ads go away when the tablet is unlocked and do not return until the screen is locked again the Fire HD 8 tablet has an 8 inch 1280 by 800 resolution HD screen storage starts at 16 gigabytes of internal storage that can be expanded up to 400 gigabytes with a micro SD card it includes a front and rear facing camera it has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity for audio you have stereo speakers Doby audio and a headphone jack battery life is up to 10 hours of reading music watching videos or web browsing in the box you get the tablet a USB cable and a charging brick I will say this is one of the most minimalist packages I’ve seen for a tablet the packaging does say something about the durability you do not have to baby this thing now leads me to the build quality it is a plastic body with a gorilla glass screen this thing does have a very durable feel I have seen a video of it being dropped repeatedly without the screen cracking or damage to the plastic it is a heavy-duty device that would be great for kids or is a device to leave lying around the house when you power on the tablet you’re greeted by Amazon’s native apps that include Kindle books audible Prime video music photos and more there is an Amazon App Store to download other apps too this is an android-based tablet but it does not have native support for the Google Play Store there are ways around that that I will explore in a future video the home screen has a tab layout that shows the focus on this being an entertainment device you have to have to take you to books video games shopping apps music audible and newsstand all these tabs are designed to jump right to amazon’s various offerings I shop on Amazon use audible Kindle books and prime video so the quick access is nice for me I can hop to a book quickly listen to an audible book or continue a show using these tabs a great benefit I see with the Fire HD tablet is when it’s plugged in it goes into show mode once show mode is enabled it’ll act like an echo device with hands-free being a fire device though it not all echo features are available I’ll get into the show mode features in another video Amazon does have an app store where you can find many popular apps and games I went through my iPad to see what I could find in Amazon’s app store that I already use you can find various music and video streaming apps a few that I use are Hulu Netflix and PlayStation View for social media you can find Facebook message or Instagram and Twitter snapchat what’s happened some others were not available you will not find YouTube Google Apps however there are third-party alternatives for some of these which I am so far not impressed with as for productivity apps you can find some of the cloud services such as onedrive and Dropbox you can also download Microsoft Outlook there is no Microsoft Office Chrome browser and other apps I might need there are third-party alternatives but I don’t want to use an alternative to Microsoft Office or Google Box not when my iPad already provides the real thing that brings me to the downside of this device the productivity side this is where this device is not worth it for me with my iPad or iPhone I could take care of 90% of my work needs or tasks that I need to get done I feel like it’d be a big step backwards to try and do those things on this tablet the device reminds me of when the iPhone and iPad came out and there was no Microsoft Google apps and other apps we take it for granted now this does have a web browser but it is not Safari or Chrome it feels clunky and unimpressive so many things can be done today on a good web browser this one just doesn’t cut it the lack of Google services is very disappointing no YouTube app is a bummer I find the workarounds are not a good experience I just rather use my phone where the Fire HD tablet lacks even with these complaints I do need to recognize that. I like, I do think the strength of the Fire HD tablet is in consuming content the layout makes for quick navigation to audiobooks Kindle books and prime video it is a great size for a Kindle replacement for reading or as an inexpensive tablet to watch around the house or on the go I like to stream the news in the morning as I’m getting or off putting it on the counter while I’m cooking and I don’t have to worry about damaging an expensive iPad or a computer this device can take abuse I think this also makes a great device for kids you can have free time unlimited to limit the content to kid-friendly content only now the area that I like and really this is where it separates itself from iPads and other tablets is having hands-free use of legs when in show mode it acts like an echo show you can make requests using effects and do much of what more expensive echo shows can do I purchase a doc for always on show mode which I’ll do a separate video on that and a side-by-side comparison with the Necco show in the future but from the time I’ve been using it I’ve been impressed at having an echo show that I can play live TV on watch Netflix control my smart devices with my voice and still be able to pick it up they use it as a regular tablet the show mode on the Fire HD tablet fixes a lot of things I don’t like about the echo show I would definitely recommend the Fire HD tablet with the doc as an echo show alternative it is a fire device and not an echo so you will be missing a handful of features that an echo show would have like most of the things you would want are there so who is this for the biggest benefit I see is using it like an echo show to enhance your echo experience I see it as a great tablet for kids to play games on or watch video and this is a good content device for really anyone if you’d like to read listen to audiobooks watch videos or play games this is a great device for you I do not see this as a device for much beyond those uses I would not want it for trying to get emails done real web browsing writing documents or other tasks I need to get done to wrap this up even. I think it’s worth it is a content device with show mode I think it’s definitely worth and it so enabled device to incorporate into your Echo household let me know your thoughts in the comment section if you like this video please hit that like button if you haven’t consider subscribing and hit that Bell to be notified of the next video if you’d like to help support the channel check out the Amazon links below if you use them Amazon will kick us back a little there’s also international links that will take you to your country’s Amazon.
