Hey, what’s up this is Jake’s welcome to tech kitchen so before I get into today’s review brought you here and you’re looking for similar videos things like unboxings and reviews of tech products home studio gear home theater products photography tips things to make you a better photographer.
You can be alerted each time I upload a new video I’m also gonna drop links to any product featured in this video in the description below so be sure to check that out as well as leave any questions you may have in the comments below so as far as today’s video it’s Black Friday time and I’ve been shopping around trying to find these perfect deal on a home theater receiver from my bedroom gaming setup all I need is something that can push 5.1 and push it well enough so that I can be fully immersed when I game so without any further ado let’s go ahead and get into the video and see what I chose you the Sony STR dh5 90 is a 5.2 channel audio/video receiver which supports 4k uhd at 60 P HDR 10 h LG dolby vision arc bravia sync and 3d it supports decoding like direct string digital high res audio and DTS HD is Bluetooth compatible for your wireless devices and pushes up to 145 watts per channel it sports a smaller metal frame than most receivers standing at only 5.25 inches tall it’s also 17 inches wide has a depth of 11 point 75 inches and weighs in at 15 point 7 pounds the left side of the receiver features a main power button a headphone jack and a calibration mic input on the right we have two knobs the smaller being the input selector followed by the volume there is a row of small buttons which run horizontally however those same functions can be found on the remote where I imagine the majority of users will access them now if we take a look at the back of that wait a minute are we were viewing a box okay look I know that I typically get an item I shoot the unboxing I put it up on the kitchen counter with some fancy lights some fancy camerawork some panning some till team some sliding all those things to get a really good unboxing and review but in this case I was just really eager it just completely slipped my mind I took it out of the box I hooked it up immediately I was so meticulous and calculating when it came to setting up the speaker wire and getting everything just right that I really didn’t want to have to take all that apart so that I could shoot the video of the receiver on the kitchen counter so forgive me forget and let’s move on so if we take a look at the back of the receiver.
We’ll see that up top we have a USB power supply followed by four hdcp 2.2 compatible hdmi inputs and one arc HDMI output along the bottom from left to right we have a coaxial and optical input the FM antenna connection for analog audio inputs for any RCA cable devices two sub outputs and your five channel speaker connections my only gripe about this receiver is that I wish all the speaker connections were binding posts like the front right and left channels instead of the spring clip connectors used on the center and surround it may not be a big deal for some but I like consistency and this is just messing with my OCD now I know I didn’t do a proper unboxing so other than the obvious styrofoam and plastic packaging here are the contents that were included we have the registration paperwork a few manuals a QuickStart guide the remote some batteries the FM antenna and the microphone use to calibrate as a side note if you’re going to be using 4k HDR using proper HDMI cables is a must I highly recommend these affordable rocket fish cables the link can be found in the description below taking a look at the top half of the remote we can find the power button as well as buttons to select between inputs and surround modes a sleep button info button display button amp menu button and a button to pair Bluetooth devices take a shot everytime I say button on the bottom we have a home button directional buttons a volume and mute button as well as buttons for tuning presets and playback I briefly want to run through the options menu so first we have pure direct which allows the source to go straight to the amp for a cleaner signal you can turn that on or off then we have sound field which allows you to switch between multiple sound field presets like movie HD DC s enjoy movies and music the way audio engineers intended movie Pro Logic 2 suitable for movies encoded in Dolby Surround movie front surround which mimics surround sound using only your front speakers music Audio Enhancer ideal for mp3s or other compressed music as well as many many other options me personally as a sound guy myself I’m going out for the movie HD dcs next we have night mode which adjusts volume so you can enjoy a surround sound at low levels dual mono which selects language of digital broadcasts for Doby digital sources and AV sync which helps synchronize audio and video now let’s get into set up because I’m extremely eager to test and start gaming we’ll start by plugging in the calibration mic to get my level set once you do that you want to place the microphone as close as possible to the actual listening position you’re going to be sitting in when gaming or watching TV try to position it at the same height your ears would be now hit the home button on the remote and go to the ez setup tab in the middle click that then click English or whatever language you prefer click start and proceed through a couple of screens and be sure to remove any obstacles between the mic and the speakers that normally wouldn’t be there and then click proceed now let’s run the digital cinema auto calibration and see what the process is like and we’re all done are pretty fast in painless process now let’s find out if it delivers now I know you can’t hear exactly what I hear and I’m only using a small set of Yamaha satellite speakers but all things considered especially that I got this for on Black Friday I’m super satisfied with the results just as a test let’s go ahead and run some quick HDR gameplay and see how it does now again I know you’re not seeing what I see my camera doesn’t support HDR and the screen you may be watching may not be HDR but you may be able to see that the colors are nice and vibrant and full of contrast I am extremely pleased with the results and like I said for the low I couldn’t be happier now if you’re interested in seeing my full bedroom gaming set up that videos coming very soon my final verdict this may be the best receiver out there for the money and definitely one I highly recommend if you don’t need Atmos or 7.1 well there you have it so let me know what you think is this a receiver that you’re going to pick up and you think is a steal for the money maybe you got an excellent deal like I did on Black Friday you walked away laughing if so let me know drop it in the comments are there any questions that you have are kind of breezed through this video I just wanted to get it done get it out the way and move on to the next so if there’s something that I left out let me know drop it in the comments and if you just think that this is a horrible recommendation there are much better options for this give way more qualities.
